Product
and care tips for baby's delicate hair |
 |
The
main requirement for caring for baby’s hair is that it
is handled with care and kept clean. Remember, whether baby
was born with a full head or hair or just a few wisps, the hair
follicles are still developing and should be treated very gently.
Check out our quick guide to keeping baby's hair in tip-top
condition.

Babies are
born with a soft spot on top of the head called the fontanel.
This area will become firmer and eventually disappear as the
skull grows. Handle the scalp, and this area in particular,
very gently as it is sensitive and can remain so for the first
few years of a child’s life.
Cradle
cap - scaly, crusty-looking white or yellow patches that appears
on the scalp of babies - is a fairly common condition that
appears within the first three months after birth and can
persist for a few weeks or months.
|
Cradle cap
does not require any specific treatment, although applying an
oil or salve (such as Green
People's Baby Salve) at night will help to loosen the crust
which can be removed in the morning by gently massaging the
area with fingers or a soft baby cloth/brush. Be careful not
to pick at the skin however, as this can irritate the delicate
scalp and create sores. Follow up by washing the scalp with
a mild baby shampoo such as Green
People's Baby Wash or Aubrey
Organics Natural Baby & Kids Shampoo.
Cradle cap normally will normally clear up as baby's scalp matures.
If the condition spreads to other areas of the body, or appears
to worsen then consult your GP.

Washing Baby's Hair |
|
Clean the hair with a mild, natural baby shampoo such as Green
People's Baby Wash or Aubrey
Organics Natural Baby & Kids Shampoo as needed (every
few days), with a pH of 5.5 (neutral) to minimise tangles. Commercial
baby shampoo’s are formulated to be ‘non-stinging’
to eyes but often have a very high pH which can cause scalp
sensitivity and cause tangles. Check the ingredients list of
a product before using and avoid those containing perfumes and
known skin
irritants.
It
is often easier to wash a baby’s hair whilst bathing them.
Whilst securely holding the baby's head, apply a small amount
of shampoo to the head and massage in gently before rinsing.
It is not necessary to apply conditioner to baby's hair - if
you notice any dryness or irritation after washing, try changing
shampoo. If irritation continues or spreads to other areas of
the body, then consult your GP.

Grooming |
Babies hair
requires simple - yet delicate - grooming. Avoid heavy, greasy
products and instead stick to light oils such as jojoba or
coconut oil (used vary sparingly) or for thicker hair, try
those products espcially formulated for babies such as Roots2Ends
Baby Pomade. Comb or brush the hair very gently using
a soft bristle brush or wide-tooth
comb in the direction of growth, ensuring the hair is
free of tangles.
Babies
commonly have short hair on the back and/or sides with longer
hair in the front. This can occur when the baby sleeps on
its back and side and rubs off the soft ‘baby hair’.
This will remain short until the more mature and stronger
hair begins to grow and is a temporary condition and not a
cause for concern. Remember, the hair texture of children
is immature until they are around seven years old and their
hair will grow and shed as well as change textures several
times up until that time.
Avoid pulling or stretching the hair into styles as this can
cause long-term damage to hair follicles, as can uncovered
rubber bands. Stay away from hair accessories which could
easily come out of baby's hair and pose as a choking hazard.
Don’t worry too much about getting the hair looking
picture perfect - it is more important that the hair and scalp
is kept clean and untangled and baby is happy.
